The short presentation discusses briefly the importance of halophytes in a world with freshwater shortages; it highlights the roles of coastal UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in AsiaPacific and how they can contribute to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals via halophyte research, conservation and development. The transdisciplinary project KlimaRhön aims at assessing water-related risks and developing adaptation measures in water management in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön in Central Germany.
