Introduction to Short Lived Climate

The GWP* climate metric has been developed to describe the future warming associated with a change in rate of emission of a short-lived climate forcer, like methane, compared to a pulse emission of CO2, a long-lived climate forcer.

Many of the anthropogenic contributors to air pollution are also sources of greenhouse gases including CO2 and other short-lived climate pollutants, such as Ozone and black carbon, which greatly contribute to the climate change phenomenon and its adverse effects on human health.

While human-induced emissions of long-lived greenhouse gases are the main driving factor of global warming, short-lived climate forcers or pollutants emitted from the forest fires are also playing an important role, especially in the Arctic.

In doing so, we turn an apparent limitation into an opportunity by using the diversity of responses to short-lived climate forcers across the CMIP6 multi-model ensemble to ensure our D&A is insensitive to structural uncertainty.

Our study suggested for the first time that, during MAM and JJA 2020, the reduced anthropogenic emissions related to the COVID-19 restrictions lowered the amount of this short-lived climate forcer/pollutant at remote locations above the PBL over northern Italy.

GWP* should be used in combination with GWP to provide feasible strategies on fighting climate change induced by short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs).
