Introduction to Know Best

Equally important, by engaging parents of young children with cerebral palsy (CP), and at least one adult with CP, they did what the developers of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) did not do in 1995 – they asked the people who know best! (This is now standard and appropriate practice in this kind of research).

It is always pleasing and reassuring to find an anthropological analysis devoted to exploring the same issues that took our attention in our own fieldwork, especially one based on ethnographic grounds radically different from the ones we know best—in my case, lowland South American indigenous societies; more specifically, the Aweti, a Tupi-speaking people who live in the upper reaches of the Xingu River (see Vanzolini 2015).
