[1] Here, we conducted a field manipulative experiment to differentiate the effects of litter inputs and living root on nematode community composition of surface and subsoils in a young Acacia crassicapa plantation in southern China. [2] Soil physicochemical properties, nematode community composition and their metabolic footprints were measured. [3] We sampled nematode communities associated with nitrogen (N) fixing and non-fixing tree species across a well-described chronosequence (Cooloola, QLD, Australia) to assess the relative importance of PFI and successional stage on nematode community composition. [4] This was associated with reductions of soil organic carbon and nitrogen as well as shifts of nematode community compositions towards rapidly evolving taxa (r–strategists) in agricultural habitats. [5] In order to cohesively understand the link between nematodes and soil C, we conducted a meta-analysis consisting of 98 observations from 11 papers to quantitatively assess how nematode community composition changes by aggregate size. [6] Changes in nematode community composition and food web status were strongly associated to soil physicochemical properties such as the active C, nitrate and soil pH.
