Introduction to Venus Clam

What is/are Venus Clam?

Venus Clam - The striped venus clam (Chamelea gallina) is the main edible bivalve living in Italian waters. ^[1] The striped venus clam Chamelea gallina is the target of a large fleet of hydraulic dredgers, which represent an important fishing sector in terms of income and landings in the Mediterranean Sea. ^[2] Venus clams (Veneridae) including Antigona lamellaris are commercially important fishery resources by their dominance in local benthic communities. ^[3] We performed whole-genome sequencing in eight warty venus clams that were diagnosed with hemic neoplasia, from two sampling points located more than 1,000 nautical miles away in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea Coasts of Spain. ^[4] Striped venus clam, Chamelea gallina, is an economically important clam species inhabiting coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Adriatic Sea, the Black Sea, and the Eastern Atlantic Ocean coasts of Europe. ^[5] There is an important small-scale fishery using mechanized dredges and targeting clams (mainly wedge clam Donax trunculus and striped venus clam Chamelea gallina) along the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean Sea). ^[6] In this study, we propose a broader approach based on the combination of RNA‐sequencing and 16S microbiota analyses to decipher the factors underlying mass mortality in the striped venus clam, Chamelea gallina, along the Adriatic coast. ^[7] Chamelea gallina (striped venus clam) is the most abundant mollusk species in the Black Sea and used as a bioindicator for monitoring of metal(loid) pollution. ^[8]
