Introduction to Southwest Indian

IODP Hole U1473A (809 m depth) was drilled during IODP Expeditions 360 and 362T at the summit of the Atlantis Bank, a gabbroic massif exhumed at the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR).

The analysis of the physical mechanisms associated with the time development of the selected rainfall regions reveals that at the west-central equatorial rainfall region, variations in relative vorticity and convergence are associated with the development of the rainfall region; whereas at the central domains of southern Africa, variations in the patterns of sea level pressure, relative vorticity and convergence at the landmasses, the tropical and the southwest Indian Ocean can be associated with the development of the distinct rainfall sub-regions.

ERA-5 reanalysis data and numerical experiments using regional climate models reveal that the two valleys act as main gateways for southwest Indian Ocean-sourced moisture inflows into southern Africa.

The Dragon Flag Supersegment between the Indomed Fault Zone (FZ) and the Gallieni FZ on the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is characterised by ultra-thick oceanic crust (up to ~10 km), and it provides a unique opportunity for studying magmatic crustal accretion at an ultraslow-spreading ridge.
