Introduction to Pristine Lake

To test this, phytoplankton resting stages were germinated from lake sediments originating from two catchments that differed in contamination history: one impacted by long-term herbicides and pesticides exposures (historically contaminated lake) from an agricultural catchment compared to a low-impacted one (near-pristine lake) from a forested catchment.

Increased reports of phytoplankton blooms in remote pristine lakes provide the perception that climate-driven fundamental changes may be occurring in lake ecosystems.

Plant associated cable bacteria were confirmed across a variety of ecosystems, including marine coastal environments, estuaries, freshwater streams, isolated pristine lakes and intensive agricultural systems.

Therefore, we retrieved a set of 38 samples from the sediment surface along spatial habitat gradients in the boreal, deep, and yet pristine Lake Bolshoe Toko in southern Yakutia, Russia.

We used gene-specific metagenomic PCR to explore changes in nitrifying and denitrifying microbial communities within pristine lake and its branches, where the ammonium and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations form a gradient.

Basic limnology and catchment characteristics of a pristine lake, Valkea-Kotinen (VK), were monitored over the past 25 years while the lake has undergone browning and DOC increased from ∼11 to 13 mg L−1.

Here, we used the cold diffusion method to analyze various sulfur species in a lake deposit of ornithogenic sediment core (C1) and a pristine lake sediment core (C2), collected from Ardley Island and Fildes Peninsula, Antarctic Peninsula, respectively.

Our results show that the underwater light environment has an important influence on primary production as a key limitation factor and is sensitive to materials in runoff from the surrounding environment for pristine lakes.

In this study, we investigated the effects of flooding and soil nutrients on the plant diversity of lakeshore Carex communities fringing a pristine lake (Poyang Lake) and a human managed lake (Shengjin Lake), two adjacent floodplain lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Two of these species, Eulimnogammarus verrucosus and Eulimnogammarus cyaneus, are common endemics of the oligotrophic and pristine Lake Baikal, while one, Gammarus lacustris, is widespread throughout the Holarctic and inhabits smaller and more eutrophic water bodies in the Baikal area.
