[1] QUESTIONS/PURPOSES We used prospectively collected data of patients with osteoarthritis from the multicenter Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) project to ask (1) What is the likelihood of a subsequent THA or TKA after primary TKA or THA? (2) What risk factors are associated with undergoing contralateral TKA after primary TKA? METHODS Longitudinally maintained data from the OAI were used to identify 332 patients who underwent primary TKA and 132 patients who underwent primary THA for osteoarthritis who did not have a previous TKA or THA in this retrospective study. Knees with radiographic osteoarthritis from Osteoarthritis Initiative participants with longitudinal medial MRI-based cartilage thickness and radiographic joint space width (JSW) loss over 12 months were selected. [6] MethodsWe identified 3 sex-matched groups among Osteoarthritis Initiative participants who had a knee without radiographic KOA at baseline (Kellgren-Lawrence [KL] < 2): 1) accelerated KOA: at least 1 knee had KL grade ≥ 3 in ≤48 months, 2) typical KOA: at least 1 knee increased in radiographic scoring within 48 months, 3) no KOA: both knees had the same KL grade at baseline and 48 months. For this aim, we used multidisciplinary data obtained from the Osteoarthritis Initiative database for individuals without or with KOA. [1] -- Methods --Using data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative database (OAI), we implemented a Deep Learning method to predict, from baseline magnetic resonance images, further cartilage degradation, the latter being measured by Joint Space Narrowing at 12 months. Using 1:2 propensity score matching for relevant confounders, we included 2509 participants (896 MetS positive and 1613 MetS negative) from the Osteoarthritis Initiative dataset.
