Introduction to Loktak Lake

What is/are Loktak Lake?

Loktak Lake - Strain JC669T was isolated from a floating island of Loktak lake, Manipur, India and shared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence identity with Aquisphaera giovannonii OJF2T. ^[1] This study reports the whole-genome sequencing and sequence analysis of a bacterial isolate Brevibacteriumcasei strain LS14, isolated from Loktak Lake, Imphal, India. ^[2] The paper comprises of an application of a multi-faceted physically based two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic model to simulate the transport phenomena of Loktak Lake, including the water quality of Loktak Lake, for which there is consensus that it is deteriorating due to river discharge from sub-catchments carrying sewage loads, soil sediments and agricultural fertilizers, and therefore, has emerged as a serious environmental concern. ^[3] The biodiverse rotifer assemblages of the floodplain lakes including Deepor Beel and Loktak Lake, the two Ramsar sites and globally megadiverse ecosystems, are hypothesized to habitat diversity of these ecotones, while ‘Rotifera paradox’ depict speciose constellations per sample. ^[4] The present study was undertaken to evaluate the diversity and activity for the group of keratinophilic fungi from the humus of “Phumdis” in Loktak Lake. ^[5] Strain JC669T was isolated from a floating island of Loktak lake, Manipur, India and shares the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence identity with Aquisphaera giovannonii OJF2T. ^[6] Phumdis are floating mats of heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil and organic matter found in Loktak Lake in Manipur, North Eastern India. ^[7] Loktak Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake of Northeastern India, characteristic by floating islands, known as Phumdis. ^[8] Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) and pyrolysis (Py) of Loktak lake biomass mixture of water hyacinth (WH) and para grass (PG) were carried out at 260–300 °C and 300–500 °C to compare the products yield and chemical characteristics of the products. ^[9] The present study evaluated the possibility of using the fresh (non-dried) mixed biomass harvested from Phumdis; which are floating vegetation unique to Loktak lake in Manipur, India, for bioethanol production. ^[10] The fish was plentifully found in the Loktak lake of the state which is the largest freshwater lake in the North Eastern India. ^[11] Live individuals of this species were collected from Loktak Lake in Manipur for cytogenetic investigation to reveal the nucleolar organizer region (NOR) through silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) and chromomycin A 3 (CMA 3 ) staining as well as DAPI staining and single-color fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using 18S rDNA sequence as probe. ^[12] The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of anthropogenic activity on the water quality of the Loktak lake. ^[13] The fish production of Manipur is mostly contributed by the Loktak Lake which is the largest freshwater lake in NE India. ^[14] Loktak Lake is an internationally important, Ramsar designated, fresh water wetland system in the state of Manipur, India. ^[15] The Loktak Lake of Manipur in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity region has been degraded and threatened due to increase in population and the demand for more resources. ^[16]
