This paper focuses on an environmental event - a major earthquake followed by 18 months of aftershocks in the Canterbury region of New Zealand - and examines the lived experiences of 31 employees who left their jobs following these earthquakes. ^[5] Career shocks have become an increasingly important part of current careers scholarship. ^[6] Career shocks are the norm, not the exception. ^[7] We interviewed an additional 15 women to deeply understand and assess their opt-out and re-entry experiences as well as “career shocks” they experienced upon returning to the workforce. ^[8] The purpose of this paper is to explore the career shocks that young, newly graduated entrepreneurs experience in the process of starting a business. ^[9] By responding to the call for research on negative career shocks and future time perspective, this study regarded internal social capital as a tool of resource retention which shifts attention to negative career shocks’ positive effects. ^[10]
