The Lancet Planetary Health is a gold Open Access journal that aims to establish and grow an entirely new field of scientific inquiryânamely, to investigate and provide solutions to the political, economic, social, and environmental determinants of healthy human civilisations and the natural systems on which they depend. In a new and urgent era of sustainable development, The Lancet Planetary Health seeks to be the pre-eminent journal for inquiry into sustainable human civilisations at a time when those civilisations face unprecedented dangers and threats. The scope of the journal is therefore wide and interdisciplinary, and includes poverty, nutrition, gender equity, water and sanitation, energy, economic growth, industrialisation, inequality, urbanisation, human consumption and production, climate change, ocean health, land use, peace, and justice. Der Impact-Faktor (IF) wird häufig als Indikator für die Bedeutung eines Journals für sein Fachgebiet verwendet. Es wurde erstmals von Eugene Garfield, dem Gründer des Instituts für wissenschaftliche Information, vorgestellt. Obwohl IF von Institutionen und Klinikern weit verbreitet ist, haben die Menschen ein weit verbreitetes Missverständnis hinsichtlich der Methode zur Berechnung des IF der Zeitschrift, seiner Bedeutung und seiner Verwendung. Das IF einer Zeitschrift hängt nicht mit Faktoren wie der Qualität des Peer-Review-Prozesses und der Qualität des Inhalts der Zeitschrift zusammen, sondern ist ein Maß, das die durchschnittliche Anzahl von Zitaten zu Artikeln widerspiegelt, die in Zeitschriften, Büchern, Abschlussarbeiten, Projektberichten und Zeitungen veröffentlicht wurden , Konferenz- / Seminarberichte, im Internet veröffentlichte Dokumente, Notizen und andere genehmigte Dokumente.
Der Impact-Faktor wird üblicherweise verwendet, um die relative Bedeutung einer Zeitschrift in ihrem Bereich zu bewerten und die Häufigkeit zu messen, mit der der „durchschnittliche Artikel“ in einer Zeitschrift in einem bestimmten Zeitraum zitiert wurde. Eine Zeitschrift, die mehr Übersichtsartikel veröffentlicht, erhält die höchsten IFs. Zeitschriften mit höheren IFs wurden als wichtiger angesehen als Zeitschriften mit niedrigeren. Laut Eugene Garfield „spiegelt die Wirkung lediglich die Fähigkeit der Zeitschriften und Herausgeber wider, das beste verfügbare Papier anzuziehen.“ Eine Zeitschrift, die mehr Übersichtsartikel veröffentlicht, erhält maximale IFs.
